Moose Hunting in Emo, Ontario, Canada

For those of you who want the ultimate challenge, a moose hunt is for you. Moose are one of North America's largest, most majestic big-game animals. Their size, combined with the vast wilderness, puts all of your hunting skills and instincts to the test. The moose in the area are in the 30-50" class. Tags are limited, so you need to book your hunt early. Hunts are from September 15 - October 20 depending on area. You can hunt at a drive-in resort (American Plan or housekeeping cottages) or fly into a remote outpost for your hunt. Fly-in moose hunts often include the flight to and out of the lake, a modern cabin with solar lights and hot & cold running water, boat/motors/gas, lake maps and an extra flight to haul out meat. You can hunt in WMU 9B or fly north to WMU 16A.

Hunting for moose in Northwestern, Ontario is very rewarding. The moose are huge. By mid-autumn, a spring calf will weigh 400 lbs (180kg). An adult cow, which is generally smaller than a bull, can weigh as much as 800 lbs (363kg). An Ontario bull in its prime can weigh as much as 1,400 lbs (636kg), with antlers close to five feet across. You can hunt for moose with rifles, shotguns, archery and muzzle-loaders. The moose hunting season for Wildlife Management Area 9B and 16A varies for the resident and non-resident. In WMU 9B, the season for non-residents starts around the third week in September, a few days after the resident season opens and runs until about mid-November. Non-residents in 9B must hunt with a guide. Residents of Ontario can hunt for moose until mid-December. For those that are flying further north to an outpost, you may be in WMU 16A. The season for resident moose hunters in 16A generally runs from around the third week in September to the middle of December. For non-residents in WMU 16A, the season starts a few days after the resident’s season and goes until mid November. Check the Ministry of Natural Resources Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary for exact hunting dates and restrictions. There is an archery-only season for residents and non-residents in WMU 9B that usually runs for the first three weeks of the regular moose hunting season. Non-residents must hunt with a guide.

Non-Residents
Non-residents who want to hunt for moose in Ontario must have a valid hunting accreditation and be a registered guest and actually accommodated at a tourist establishment. The outfitter must apply for and receive, on the non-resident’s behalf, a validation tag to hunt moose (view the Hunting Regulations for exceptions). A non-resident may hunt in a party for moose when hunting in the Emo area. The number of bull, cow and calf moose taken must not be more than the number of bull and cow validation tags and valid moose licences held by the members of the party.

Residents
A resident of Ontario who has a valid hunting version Outdoors card and a current moose hunting licence tag (sticker that goes on the back of the Outdoors Card), may hunt calf moose in any WMU that has an open season. To receive a validation tag to hunt for an adult moose, the resident hunter must purchase moose licence and apply to the moose validation tag draw for either a bull tag or a cow tag. Adult tags are issued through a computerized lottery. The validation tag authorizes the holder to hunt only the sex of adult moose described on the tag in the WMU specified.
