Bass Fishing Tips
Smallmouth bass often seem to be not far from deep water. Look for some rocky points and you'll fins some smallies. Spinner and buzz baits are great for novices as they don't require the feel that a jig does. They are also easy to cast, can go through weeds fairly easily and the hook comes out of the fish much easier than with a crankbait. You should also bring along some jigs and colored rubber tails. Use 6 or 8 pound test line with jigs from 1/8 to 1/4 oz, and have a few lighter and heavier in case you need them. Smallmouth also love leeches. Top water lures like the Baby Torpedo or Pop-R's will also take both large and smallmouth bass during any month. Dancing a floating Rapala or similar minnow bait will also take bass. These are only a few tips, you outfitter will have plenty of more bass fishing tips when you get there.
Bass Fishing Tournaments
Kenora host the Annual KBI,
Kenora Bass International Fishing Tournament. It is a catch & Release event on beautiful Lake of the Woods. The tournament is usually hled on the Thursay, Friday and Saturday after the August Long weekend. The first KBI was held in 1988 with 43 boats. Today, 150 teams are allowed in and it is one of the best bass fishing tournaments around. Besides the top prize for the biggest total over three days, there is Team Canada/Team USA competition, a KBI kids tournament, a community fish fry, a Ukrainian Dinner, and a Steak Dinner on Saturday for all anglers, sponsors, guest and volunteers. Even if you aren't fishing in the tournament, don't miss the weigh-ins. They are great to watch, especially the top 10 KBI anglers parading through the tent.
