Northwestern Ontario has one of the largest black bear populations in North America. The bear season for for a resident and non-resident hunter in the the areas surrounding Rainy River mid August to around the end of October. The WMU nearest to the Rainy River district is area 10 and with a sort drive areas 7A, 7B, and 9B.
Black bear hunting licences are avaliable to both resident and non-resident hunters. A non-resident who wishes to hunt black bear in Ontario must have a Black Bear Hunting Licence Validation Certificate to validate a non-resident black bear hunting licence. This certificate can be obtained from a tourist operator (operator of a tourist establishment, guide or air carrier) licenced in Ontario to provide black bear hunting services to non-residents. Many of the lodges in the Rainy River area have guided, baited bear hunts, but book soon. Many of the fall bear hunts fill up fast.
