Directions to Rainy River, Ontario, Canada

Rainy River is located at the Ontario-Minnesota border just across the river from Baudette, Minnesota. The bridge you cross between Baudette into Rainy River is a toll-free bridge. Once in Baudette, MN, watch for the BIG FISH, "Willie Walleye", on the left. There is also a "Holiday" Gas Station on the right. Turn left at that intersection and follow the road "past" the USA border crossing, over the Rainy River Bridge, and stop at the Canadian border.

Rainy River is a three hour drive southeast of Winnipeg and just 22 km (14 miles) south of Lake of the Woods. If you are entering Canada from Fort Frances, go west on Highway 11 for 90 km (55 miles) until you reach Rainy River. If you are crossing at Baudette, simply cross the bridge and you will be in the Town of Rainy River.

Winnipeg to Rainy River - through USA (Approximately 3 hours)
Take Highway 1 East then turn right (south) on Highway 12, passing through Steinbach, MB. Keep driving and then proceed past the Canadian border, then stop at the USA border crossing. Continue straight, and you will come into Warroad, MN. At Warroad turn left (east) on U.S. Highway 11 (at Stop Light).There are large yellow buildings on left. Proceed east, following Highway 11 to Baudette, MN (approx. 40 minutes). Cross the International Border at Baudette into Canada and you'll be in Rainy River. An alternate route from Winnipeg is to go through Kenora. Take the Trans Canada Highway east from Winnipeg to Kenora. Just before arriving in Kenora, you can veer right (Highway 17A) and go through Kenora or save time and stay straight and take the by-pass (Highway 17B. At the turn off to Sioux Narrows/Nestor Falls, take Highway 71 south until the Highway comes to an end at Highway 11. At the Highway 71 and Highway 11 junction, turn right (west) and head towards Rainy River. This route will take approximatley 5.5 hours.
