Lodges in Savant Lake Ontario

Savant Lake is located about 80 miles (130 km) north of Ignace on Highway 599. The largest lakes around Savant Lake are Sturgeon Lake and Lake Savant. Savant Lake is nearly 52 miles long, 305 feet deep and has over 800 miles of shoreline. The Lake is south of Savant Lake and has drive-in and boat-in island resorts. In addition to excellent walleye, northern pike and deep lake trout fishing, Sturgeon Lake also offers shallow water lake trout fishing. At ice out, lake trout are found in the shallow water. They are hungry, aggressive and will hit on most any spoon or diving lure you cast them. In the fall, trout come to the shallows to spawn. Throw small heavy spoons, spinners, or spinner baits around the rocky reefs near deep water. Thanks to its many bays and islands, you can go fishing or boating under almost any weather conditions.

To the west of Savant Lake are Allanwater, Wabakimi Provincial Park and Heathcote Lake, which is formed by the Flindt River. Allanwater and Heathcote Lake are accessed by plane or train only. You can fly-in from Savant Lake. If you are going to take Via Rail, you have a couple of ways to get here depending on which way you are coming from Minnesota go one of two ways: you can cross the border at Pigeon River, then proceed north from Thunder Bay on Highway 527 to Armstrong. The train ride from Armstrong to camp is about one hour or you can cross the border at International Falls, then you take Highway 502 to Dryden and Highway 72 to Sioux Lookout. The train ride from Sioux Lookout is one hour. You can also take the train all the way from your hometown. Check with your local Amtrak agent about all train schedules from the USA or with Via Rail in Canada. If you drive through Michigan and cross the border at Sault Ste. Marie, take Highway 17 along Lake Superior to White River where Highway 631 goes north to Hornepayne. The train ride from Hornepayne to Savant Lake is just over six hours.
