Hunting for Moose in Sioux Lookout, Canada

The vast wilderness that surrounds Sioux Lookout is ideal for a Canadian moose hunt. Success rates for a moose hunt are generally very high. Hunting resorts in the area have only a limited number of tags for non-residents to hunt moose, so booking early is essential. If you are hunting for moose in the Sioux Lookout area, you will be hunting in Wildlife management Units (WMU) 5 or 4. A few outfitters from Sioux Lookout also have tags to hunt at their flyin outposts in WMU 16A.

The moose hunting seasons in the Sioux Lookout area are broken down into two categories The 'Rifles, Shotguns, Archery and Muzzle-loaders' season and the 'Archery Only' season.

Rifles, Shotguns, Archery and Muzzle-loaders Category
For WMUs 4 & 5, moose hunting season is open to residents the second Saturday in October and lasts until mid December. For non-residents, the season starts two days after the resident's season, on the Monday, and lasts until mid-November.

Archery Only Category
To hunt for moose with archery only in the Sioux Lookout area, you can hunt in WMUs 4 & 5. The season is three weeks long for both residents and non-residents alike. The Archery only season for hunting moose generally starts the third Saturday in September and runs for three weeks.

Information for Non-Residents Wishing to Hunt Moose
A non-resident who wishes to hunt moose in Ontario must have valid hunting accreditation and be a registered guest and actually accommodated at a tourist establishment. The tourist outfitter must apply for and receive, on the non-resident's behalf, a validation tag to hunt moose. A non-resident's licence to hunt moose is only valid if it has a bull, cow or calf validation tag affixed to it. The nonresident may only hunt moose of the age and sex specified on the validation tag. A non-resident may hunt in a party for moose when hunting in a Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) that is specified on the validation tag and that has a non-resident season. The party hunting must be carried out in accordance with the definition of party hunting.

There are a few exceptions to the requirement to hunt through an outfitter. Please visit the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Hunting Regulations for more detailed information and for any exceptions.
