Day-use Parks and Provincial Parks in Sioux Lookout

Sioux Lookout has several picnic areas and day-use parks in and around the town. Many of these sites are great for a picnic or a swim on a hot summer day. The Ojibway Provincial Park is located 25 kms southwest of Sioux Lookout on Highway 72.

Ojibway Provincial Park Located south of the town of Sioux Lookout, the Ojibway Provincial Park is managed by the Sioux Lookout and Hudson Association for Community Living and the Minisrty of Natural Resources- Ontario Parks. The park offers camping from early May until Labour Day. You can visit the park for the day, week, month or for the whole season. The park offers 45 campsites, 22 of which have electrical service. Come for a picnic, and relax on the beach where children can swim and play in the sand or climb the play structure nearby. The park has one group camping area that can accommodate 10 tents or anywhere from 20-25 people. Water and toilets are available on site. The site is located just minutes from Little Vermillion Lake and the Boreal Walking Trail, a 1.5 km trail leading to the island. Reservations can be made by contacting the park directly at 807-737-2033 in the summer or 807-223-7535 in the winter.

Amenities at Ojibway Provincial Park include a laundromat, play area, 2 boat launches, canoes and motorboat rentals, showers and a park store. The park is situated on Little Vermilion Lake and offers good swimming, a sandy beach and fine fishing. Fishing is good for lake trout, muskie, bass, walleye and perch in Vermilion Lake, Minnitaki Lake and Lac Seul.

Hiking trails weave through pine forests carpeted with lady's slipper orchids. There are 6 different hiking trails. The Boreal Walking Trail (1.5 km) is an easy 1 hour walk through boreal forest, larch and jack pines grow among white and black spruce and white birch. The Lakeshore Trail (6 km return) is a 2.5 hour moderate hike with four interpretive stops explaining the vegetation and geology found along the shore of the lake. The Little Walking Trail is an easy 0.8 km (45 minutes) walk. There are twelve interpretive stops along this trail describe the diversity of trees, plants and animal life typical of a boreal forest. The Red Pine Walking Trail is an easy 0.5 km (30 minutes) walk. Learn about forest succession at nine interpretive stops along this trail. The Ridge Bottom Trail (2.8 km) walk of moderate difficulty that will take approximately one and a half hours. A wide variety of lichens, soils and fungi is described at the 14 interpretive stops along this trail. The Terry Lake Trail is an easy 1.5 km (1 hour) walk. This trail leads to Terry Lake where you can fish and watch for wildlife.
