Sioux Lookout has many services to offer to both residents and visitors alike. In recent years, the community has benefited significantly from its close relationship with northern First Nations communities. Providing services to these communities has become a major factor in Sioux Lookout's growing economy. In the last decade, the economic base in Sioux Lookout has changed dramatically; accompanying this shift has been corresponding changes in the demographics. The Federal Zone Hospital and the regional office for the Department of Indian Affairs were the anchors that started the locating of a number of First Nations agencies to Sioux Lookout. The list includes Wawatay Communications Society, Tikinagan Child and Family Services, Northern Nishnawbe Education Council, as well as a number of Tribal Councils.
The population of Sioux Lookout is over 5100. North of Sioux Lookout there are 23 First Nations communities with a total of 15,000 residents. Most of those northern communities are accessible only by air and therefore Sioux Lookout acts as their service centre. As Sioux Lookout services a population several times the size of its own population, it has many more amenities than one would expect in a town of its size. For example, there is a zone or regional hospital, a district hospital and a medical clinic.
The future of Sioux Lookout is full of potential as there are a number of projects in the development stage that will have an impact on the community's status as a service centre. A videoconferencing facility is being set up that will allow two way video transmission and eliminate the expense of travel. Also is the works is a new amalgamated hospital, a new medical clinic, a new public school, the expansion of the current 9 hole golf course to 18 holes, cell phone service and 911 service. The future of Sioux Lookout relies on its ability to develop a symbiotic relationship with the northern communities and use its central location to benefit everyone.
The Meno Ya Win Health Centre has two sites, 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue (new sit also to be built in the near future). Their phone numbers are 807-737-3700 and 807-737-3030 respectively. The Hugh Allen Clinic can be reached at 807-737-3803.
